Letter dated November 9, 2007, from Harry VanSickle, Commissioner, Bureau of Commissions, Elections and Legislation, to Timothy Johnson, Allegheny County, concerning 2005 standards and EAC certification. Also attached is a statement from ES&S
concerning the same. We note that this letter was handed to us on April 8, 2008, by Allan Opsitnick, Assistant County Solicitor. We are grateful to him. We had been requesting a copy of this since last year. We also note that this information was
supposed to have been posted up on the Allegheny County website by January 31, 2008, per a meeting on December 12, 2007; when it was handed to us it had not been posted. We are happy to provide it here.
Email dated June 13, 2008, from Richard King to Pedro Cortés, Secretary of the Commonwealth, concerning confusion over Allegheny County relegating to the Commonwealth what the Commonwealth has relegated to the counties.
Email from Richard King to and response from Harry VanSickle, Commissioner, Bureau of Commissions, Elections and Legislation, concerning recent issues in Arkansas. Apparently our Secretary of the Commonwealth is willing to trust
the ES&S company representative sent across the country at the voters' expense to say "everything is fine, it was only user error." When will we realize that we cannot trust the company with whom we have contracted for goods and services to educate us as to how bad their goods and services really are?
Letter dated June 26, 2008, from Pedro Cortés, Secretary of the Commonwealth, to Richard King, concerning confusion over Allegheny County relegating to the Commonwealth what the Commonwealth has relegated to the counties. Although we do not wish to editorialize, we do note that the esteemed Secretary of the Commonwealth
has likened the acquisition of voting systems by counties to a relay race, wherein the state passes a baton to the county, which runs with it. He also indicates that a key element the state (and, by suggestion, the counties) would look for is a change in the version number of the software. So, we might take this as a hint to vendors - if you change the software surreptitiously, remember to have it print out the same version number.
